Camarillo, Calif., March 3, 2009 — The Environmental Science and Research Management, and English programs at California State University Channel Islands will host a presentation by author Dan Koeppel at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 10 in Aliso Hall 150.
Koeppel is a frequent guest on national radio programs, including NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. This presentation will feature a reading from his latest book, Banana: the Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World. The book provides a compelling and thought-provoking look at a fruit whose innocuous and ubiquitous presence on our kitchen counters belies not only its troubled history but also its tenuous future. Koeppel has recently returned from an expedition up the Congo River in search of rare banana breeds for National Geographic.
In addition to his radio appearances, Koeppel is a contributing editor at National Geographic Adventure and has published articles in Popular Science, Bicycling, the New York Times Magazine, Wired, Outside, and Audubon. He is the author of several additional books including The Tour De France Companion, Extreme Sports Almanac and To See Every Bird on Earth: A Father, A Son, and a Lifelong Obsession. Koeppel will be signing copies of his work which will be available for purchase.
“Koeppel’s unique ability to weave together political and environmental history, science, and economics into a riveting and seamless narrative makes for a gripping reading experience and carries over into the author’s own discussions of his work,” said Dr. Stacey Anderson, a lecturer in the English program.
Limited parking is available on campus. A daily permit is $6. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo as us bus service to and from the campus. Riders should board the CSUCI VISTA Bus and the fare is $1 each way. Buses arrive and depart from the Camarillo Metrolink Station every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.
