Camarillo, Calif., April 28, 2008—The Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics is one of the sponsors of the CPA/Law Society of Ventura County’s Ethics Symposium Scholarship Fundraiser. The symposium will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at the Pierpont Inn, Ventura.
Proceeds from the event fund scholarships for students at California State University Channel Islands, the University of California Santa Barbara, the Pepperdine School of Law, and the Ventura College of Law. Additionally, attendance at the symposium provides four hours of continuing education credit for accountants and attorneys.
The CPA/Law Society, with chapters in Ventura, Westlake, and Santa Barbara, is an organization principally comprised of certified public accountants and attorneys who meet monthly to hear speakers on various topics of professional or personal interest. This year, the goal of the CPA/Law Society is to donate $50,000 in scholarships in conjunction with matching scholarships with its members.
The keynote speaker for the event is Gordon Binder, former CEO/Chairman of the Board of Amgen Inc. Forbes magazine counted him among “biotech’s most respected business minds.” In “Science Lessons,” his recently released book, Binder describes Amgen’s climb to success.
The morning speakers and panel include Barrie Bergman, a successful entrepreneur in the Entertainment Industry with Record Bar, and in the Cosmetic Industry with Bare Escentuals; Pepperdine School of Law Professor Christine Chambers Goodman, who writes on equal protection topics, including affirmative action, preferences and racial privacy, as well as the use of evidence in criminal trials; and Amanda Massucci, CPA, a Partner in the Los Angeles Fraud Investigation & Dispute Services practice at Ernst & Young.
The symposium also is sponsored by Bank of America, Hemming Morse, Nordman Cormany Hair & Compton, and Rabobank.
