Housing and Residential Education

Involvement & Employment

Listed below are involvement and employment opportunities available to students within Housing and Residential Education (HRE). Some are volunteer positions and some are paid, but all of them offer you the chance to participate and have influence within your living area. Most of the positions do not require previous experience, just a willingness to serve your fellow students and have a good time.

Program Assistants (PAs): PAs work closely with the resident assistants to plan and facilitate events and activities. This is a great entry-level position that affords students multiple connections with peers, mentoring from fellow students, and weekly interaction with professional staff. These positions are mostly volunteer, but a small monthly stipend is offered. Contact Cris Powell at cris.powell@csuci.edu for more information.

Students in Santa Cruz Village Office Desk Assistants (DAs): DAs work at the front desk of the Village offices and the main housing office providing support for the professional staff and general office functions. The DA position allows students to meet a variety of residents while gaining work skills that will assist them with professional advancement. Contact Laura Dolan at laura.dolan@csuci.edu for more information.

Summer Conference Staff: Summer Conference staff live on-campus and assist with the coordination and facilitation of conferences and events from May through August. This paid position is ideal for students with a commitment to customer service interested in working with external groups and living in the Villages during the summer months. Contact Lisa Racine at lisa.racine@csuci.edu for more information.

2009-2010 Resident Assistants
Resident Assistants (RAs): Though the primary role of RAs is advisor to their floor community, they also serve as a peer advisor, informal counselor, group facilitator, policy enforcer, program planner, and friend to the residents living in the community. If you feel the RA position is right for you, begin preparing immediately by applying for one of many HRE student leadership positions listed above or other leadership positions on campus. Becoming a RA takes preparation and the aforementioned leadership opportunities will put you in good standing when the application period comes around. Contact Laura Dolan at laura.dolan@csuci.edu for more information.

Game Clerks:  Santa Cruz Village contains a billiard and a game room that are under the event genius and facilitation of the game clerks. The clerks are there to assist with the checkout of materials, coordination of tournaments and game rule discrepancies. In addition, the clerks plan and execute events in the games and billiards room. If you are interested in acting as the host for these activities, please contact the resident director of Santa Cruz Village for more information.

Maintenance Staff: The grounds of both student housing villages are breathtaking. Many who visit comment that our facilities look more like a resort than a student housing facility. That is not without the effort of a dedicated group of student staff. As a maintenance staff member you would work to rake the sycamore leaves, pull weeds and rejuvenate the plant beds within student housing. If you love working outside and independently toward a team goal, then the maintenance position may be for you.
