Sunset Competition Courtyards

Bell tower building

Contest Summary

  • California State University Channel Islands, housed in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Santa Monica mountains, boasts lovely mission-style architecture and dozens of outdoor courtyards.
  • Originally the home of Camarillo State Hospital, the burgeoning new campus needed revitalization. A partnership with Sunset magazine was formed and a contest was launched, inviting landscape professionals to submit designs for any of four courtyards slated for restoration among the historic buildings on the campus. Judging was conducted by representatives from CSUCI, Sunset magazine, and independent landscape architects. The winning designs have been selected and now the beautification can begin in earnest.
  • This project has several components. The first need is funds to have the project working drawings prepared from the winning designs. Once that is accomplished, in-kind and cash donations will be needed to complete the construction phase of the project. Finally, endowment dollars will be needed to ensure that the fully renovated and beautiful courtyards can be maintained for future generations.

President's Courtyard

President's Courtyard

  • One of the Sunset Magazine Design Competition courtyards, the President's Courtyard will be used for numerous small VIP receptions as well as a place for staff, faculty, and visitors to the campus to enjoy. Funding and/or endowing this courtyard is a highly visible naming opportunity.

Other Courtyards

Other Courtyards

  • In addition to the President's Courtyard, three priority courtyards are planned for rehabilitation. Those pictured above are high traffic areas for students and will become focal points of interest on the campus.
