This course gives MS Biotechnology and Dual Degree MS/MBA students a first exposure to
selected speakers from biotechnology academia and industry. All speakers will present their
functional area expertise in order to provide a basic understanding of all relevant activities and
critical issues emerging in the entire biotechnology value chain spanning from early drug
discovery research to development to commercialization. All speakers will provide their
information to students in a way demonstrating various sciences, scientific disciplines and the
scientific method are applied in various disciplines in the biotechnology industrial setting. Via the
presentation, Q/A and exexutive summary report formate, students will gain the basic understanding
of scientific content, language and key critical issues of biotechnology innovation,
research, development and commercialization, relevant in academic and industry R&D. The
students will gain insights into current and future relevant areas of biotechnology research,
development and commercialization. Students are asked to independently prepare all
presentation topics & generate key questions beforehand based on overview literature provided.
The Executive Summary Report approach aims to ensure students ability to critically think about
the biotechnology topic area, prepare questions, and summarize presentation contents, key
issues and and respective Q/A in a structured, organized and concise manner. Students will be
mandated to provide this executive summary formate after every Biotechnology seminar within a
pre-defined timeframe. The students will gain the basic understanding that all research,
development and commercialization activities are not only highly complex, but more importantly
are not conducted independently and are highly integrated, interdependent and interconnected in
order to deliver a commercializable biotechnology product.
